Re: Making Sure the Majority Wins (Instant Runoff Voting; Bills #4481, 4482)
Dear Assemblyman (or Assemblywoman or Senator) Xxxxxx:
I am writing to ask that you please give your support to Assembly Bill #4481, 4482 to adopt Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) as the system used for New York State primaries and local elections.
I believe in the principle of majority rule, and sometimes there are elections with more than two candidates where a runoff would be needed to make a majority for the winner. IRV allows the selection of the runoff choice at the same time as the original vote, and would save the unnecessary expense of a separate runoff election and prevent weak plurality wins.
Having a majority win for a candidate means that winners will have the support of the electorate for governance, and will prevent the least preferred candidate from winning.
Thank you for your consideration to Instant Runoff Voting.
Yours truly,
